CS8/ Large Confederate "Fork Tongue" Frame Buckle

$645.00

This fine Fork Tongue is untouched and just as it was when it was lost at Brice's Crossroads in mid 1864. This buckle has no repairs and has no cracks or breaks although it does have a slight wave to it. The tongue is original to buckle. What a fine piece of history from Brice's Crossroads that seen the Elephant and "My Hero" The Wizard of the Saddle !!

At 9:45 a.m. on June 10, a brigade of Benjamin H. Grierson's Union cavalry division reached Brice's Crossroads and the battle started at 10:30 a.m. when the Confederates performed a stalling operation with a brigade of their own. Forrest then ordered the rest of his cavalry to converge around the crossroads. The remainder of the Union cavalry arrived in support, but a strong Confederate assault soon pushed them back at 11:30 a.m., when the balance of Forrest's cavalry arrived on the scene. Grierson called for infantry support and Sturgis obliged. The line held until 1:30 p.m. when the first regiments of Federal infantry arrived.

The Union line, initially bolstered by the infantry, briefly seized the momentum and attacked the Confederate left flank, but Forrest launched an attack from his extreme right and left wings, before the rest of the federal infantry could take to the field. In this phase of the battle, Forrest commanded his artillery to unlimber, unprotected, only yards from the Federal position, and to shell the Union line with grapeshot. The massive damage caused Sturgis to re-order the line in a tighter semicircle around the crossroads, facing east.

At 3:30, the Confederates in the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry assaulted the bridge across the Tishomingo. Although the attack failed, it caused severe confusion among the Federal troops and Sturgis ordered a general retreat. With the Tennesseans still pressing, the retreat bottlenecked at the bridge and a panicked rout developed instead. The ensuing wild flight and pursuit back to Memphis carried across six counties before the exhausted Confederates retired.

CS4/ Louisiana Militia Shoulder Belt Plate, ca. 1858-1900

$725.00

Beautiful and full of the original gilt remaining on this Louisiana Militia shoulder belt plate. This is plate 724 in the American Military Belt Plates / Michael J. O'Donnell & J. Duncan Campbell reference book. Dimensions are 53 x 69 mm and is gilt die struck rolled brass with two loops soldered on the back. Remarks: Because this is a very common plate, and the original die is dated 1858, a number should have a Civil War provenance. However, most examples clearly date from the post war period. They were advertized in a turn of the century military supply catalogue. This one is absolutely original and has been inspected by myself and a couple of other very intelligent individuals!

$975.00***ON HOLD***BR

Here's you a very, very hard one to find this non-dug VMM has a few by golly I was there dents and dings but is not uncommon because these are thin stamped and has light lead back holding the attachment hook in place. This is a good sturdy plate with a nice period belt that would be the actual belt but this one is a marriage. The leather is good and strong but shows signs of it's age. Has crazing to the leather and shallow surface cracks to the outside but is very sturdy. The plate has absolutely no repairs and is sturdy enough to wear.
